Westerwald stoneware stein by Simon Gerz

This Westerwald lidded stoneware stein from the factory of Simon Peter Gerz of Hohr in Prussia, features moulded decorative scene of people dancing outside two buildings. Sitting on top of the stein is a wonderfully detailed gnome, cross-legged and holding a foaming stein. Although it doesn't show it, the shape number is 238. It stands 326 mm (12.25 inches) high to the top of the lid, and has a diameter at the base of 106 mm (4.12 inches). It is in very good condition. The base carries an impressed Gerz stamp that was introduced in 1893, and it would date from around 1900.
