French ladies coin purse inlaid with silver and mother of pearl
This lovely small ladies coin purse has the tortoiseshell exterior inlaid with silver and mother of pearl and features a hanging spray of flowers with three bell like flowers done in mother of pearl. There is also a silver panel for the owner's initials, and the thumbpiece and the hinge are 9 carat gold. Internally it is lined with red silk and has four compartments, one of which closes on a simple locking mechanism. It measures 65 mm (2.75 inches) high, 50mm (2 inches) wide and 20 mm (.75 inch) thick. It is in very good condition. On both the top and bottom there are areas that look like cracks, but they are actually areas where the forming and polishing of the tortoiseshell has exposed the edge of the naturally occuring layers of the tortoiseshell. It was made in France in around 1860.
