Stoneware hunting jug by James Stiff of Lambeth

This decorative stoneware hunting jug was made by James Stiff of Lambeth, London and was used for the serving of ale or beer. It is decorated with crisply moulded sprigs featuring a deer being chased by hounds and a hunter on horseback, two drinkers, a tree and a windmill. Sprigs are made when clay is pressed into a very shallow mould, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug, before the piece is fired and glazed. The jug stands 168 mm (6.75 inches) high, and has a diameter of 140 mm (5.5 inches). It is unmarked, but the terminal on the strap handle and distinctive sprigs show that it is by Stiff. It is in very good condition and would date from around 1880.
