Sprigged French snuff or tobacco bottle with pewter lid

This French snuff or tobacco bottle is decorated with very detailed, and quite pronounced, applied sprigs of fruit, flowers, leaves and butterflies, and there is a slight iridescence to the glaze. Normally this type of ware from the Beauvais area of France is finished with a monochrome, or salt glaze finish, but this has used coloured glazes to highlight the leaves and the butterflies. It is capped with a screw on pewter lid which has a very delicate diaper pattern to the shoulder. There is a ring of flowers to the shoulder of the canister, and a ring of beads to the foot. The piece stands 167 mm (6.5 inches) high, and has a diameter of 97 mm (3.75 inches). Apart from some faint crazing and a 4 mm (3/8ths of an inch) long split to the lid, it is in very good condition. There are no makers marks on the body and no touch marks on the pewter. It would date from around the 1860's.
