Smaller Hoffman Melbourne Centenary jug
This Hoffman commemorative jug is the smaller of the two issued in 1934 to commemmorate the centenary of the founding of Melbourne. The Hoffman Brick, Tile and Pottery Co. of Brunswick in Melbourne's north, also produced Melrose ware as their art pottery range, with the Centenary jugs modelled by Ted Kaye (1882-1957). This jug features raised profiles of John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner on either side, below a banner "Melbourne Centenary 1934" and the quotation "This will be the place for a village" (which differs from the larger jug). It stands 120 mm high and has a diameter of 91 mm. it is in excellent condition.
