Rare double opening tortoiseshell and gold snuff box
This lovely rare double opening tortoiseshell snuff box features a moulded pattern of dots to the main lid and a gold plaque for the owner's initials. This has been left blank. The sides surrounding the lid are reeded, and across each corner is a strip of gold, on the other side of which are moulded sunbursts. The lid is further enhanced with a gold thumbpiece and hinge. The gold work is 9 ct rose gold, verified by a jeweller. The length is 60 mm (2.5 inches), the width 40 mm (1.5 inches) and it stands 20 mm (.75 of an inch) high. Both ends of the inner lip of the larger opening have been broken off (as shown in the photos), otherwise it is in very good condition. It is probably French and would date from around 1810.
