Larger Hoffman Melbourne Centenary jug
This Hoffman jug is the larger of the two issued in 1934 to commemmorate the centenary of the founding of Melbourne. The Hoffman Brick, Tile and Pottery Co. of Brunswick in Melbourne's north, also produced Melrose ware as their art pottery range, with the Centenary jugs modelled by Ted Kaye (1882-1957). This jug features raised profiles of John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner on either side, below a banner "Melbourne Centenary 1934" and the quotation "This is the spot for a village" (which differs from the smaller jug). It stands 168 mm high with a diameter of 120 mm. and it is in excellent condition apart from two small chips to the lip, one under the glaze, ex-factory.
