Cast bronze ink stand with rouge marble insert by Ernst Zimmermann of Hanau

This good quality and inticately cast bronze ink stand sits in a tray featuring a rouge marble insert. It is by Ernst Zimmermann of Hanau, with Zimmermann's foundry mark showing the latin motto "Carpe Diem" inside a six spoked wheel, together with a square, dividers and two mallets. To the front and rear of the lidded inkwell are depictions of a "Green Man" type mythical creature, which is echoed in similar masks in each corner of the tray. The stand measures 200 mm (8 inches) square, stands 115 mm (4.5 inches) high, and weighs 1.8 kg (4 pounds). It is missing the insert to hold the ink and the hinge for the lid is a bit loose, but overall it is in very good condition. It would date from the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
