Royal Worcester Sabrina ware vase painted by Walter Sedgley

This small baluster shaped vase is by Royal Worcester and is from their Sabrina Ware range. The vase is hand painted by Walter Sedgley who was at the Worcester factory from 1889 until 1929 and was one of their principal painters for many years. The decoration depicts a goose flying over a moody landscape situated between trees. It stands 155 mm (6 1/8th inches) high with a diameter of 75 mm (3 inches). It is in excellent condition. The date mark is for 1914.

Sabrina Ware was first introduced in 1894 and ran through to the mid-1930’s. A beautiful, subtle decoration caused by the effects of metallic salts, the exact final effect could not be controlled and this was considered part of its charm. During the biscuit firing the salts were found to crystallise producing random effects and luminous clouding. The final result being affected by the condition of the clay, density of atmosphere and temperature in the kiln and gases generated during the firing, every piece of Sabrina ware was unique and it was impossible to duplicate effects. Sabrina Ware with its flowing blues and greens was reminiscent of the Severn River which flows though Worcester, and named after Sabrina the Goddess of the River Severn.
