Robert Dunlop - Studio Line Squatter’s Chair
This stunning campaign Squatter’s chair is part of Robert Dunlop's highly-celebrated Studio Line range, conceived in collaboration with renowned Danish designer Tom Larsen, and produced in Dunlop’s workshop in Stafford, Brisbane, circa 1974.
It is composed of Radiata pine, native to coastal areas of New South Wales, anodised brushed aluminium, and full grain leather.
Dunlop's use of exotic timbers along with brushed aluminium tubing was a sensation at the time and compared to today's offerings still stands out from the pack. The intriguing mix of timber and metal imparts a brutalist rawness that eludes a lot of designer furniture these days.
The base structure featuring chunky pole legs has undergone a rejuvenation with touch-ups and coating in Danish Oil. The brushed aluminium horizontal components present with a sleek matte finish which pops against the pine honey tones of the legs.
During his career, Dunlop was commissioned to design furniture for Parliament House and the High Court of Australia in Canberra. The Design Institute of Australia inducted Dunlop into its Hall of Fame in October 2015, the year following his passing.
It is obvious why furniture was so celebrated at the time, and so tightly held to this day in Australia and beyond.
The approximate dimensions are:
- Height: 88cm;
- Depth: 97cm;
- Width: 79cm;
- Seat Height: 35cm.
