Georgian Mahogany Apothecary Box, c.1820

Georgian mahogany apothecary box, with fitted drawer and brass handles and escutcheon, c.1820

The box has a flush brass handle to the top and a hinged lid. It opens to reveal a red velvet lined interior, partitioned with six large and eight smaller inserts for bottles, of which two large and three smaller remain (bottles are chipped and without stoppers). The drawer beneath also has a flush brass handle and has a locking pin. It is also lined in red velvet. The drawer is partitioned, including two small lidded containers which lift out for removal. The drawer contains a brass instrument and miscellaneous pieces.

A box such as this could have been used on a naval or merchant ship.
